Donovan Legal PLLC — A Tax-First Law Practice Focused on Real Estate

Donovan Legal PLLC

A tax-first practice focused on real estate.

DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA  ·  CLIENTS SERVED NATIONWIDE

Donovan Legal PLLC advises real estate developers, investors, funds, operating businesses, and the high-net-worth families behind them on the federal, state, and international tax issues that drive the economics of their structures and represents those same clients when those structures, returns, or positions come under examination. The firm is built around a simple integration: planning, compliance, and controversy under one practitioner who is both a Certified Public Accountant and an attorney admitted to practice law in Florida and Massachusetts.

The Donovan Legal Difference

One Firm. Full Cycle Representation. No Handoffs.

A tax position designed in planning has to be reflected on the return. A position reflected on the return is what gets examined if challenged. Most clients run these three functions through three different advisors with handoffs that introduce gaps in the record. Donovan Legal PLLC keeps planning, compliance, and controversy integrated under one firm. The same firm reads the underlying documents, signs the return, and defends the position if examined.

Two concentric cycles — the tax practice and the real estate life cycle — run together under one firm A wheel diagram with two concentric chevron-arrow rings rotating clockwise. The outer ring shows the three functions of the tax practice as equal chevron segments: Planning, Compliance, Controversy. The inner ring shows the three phases of the real estate life cycle as equal chevron segments offset 60 degrees from the outer ring: Acquisition, Ownership, Disposition. The center of the wheel reads ONE FIRM. ONE FIRM PLANNING COMPLIANCE CONTROVERSY ACQUISITION OWNERSHIP DISPOSITION

Two cycles, running in parallel. The tax practice — planning, compliance, controversy — runs continuously across every phase of the property's life, from the day the deal is structured through any future examination. One firm holds the file end to end.

“To be effective as a tax lawyer, you must have the ‘bi-lingual’ ability to speak numbers and words. Being both a lawyer and a CPA allows me to communicate more easily with both. It also gives me visibility on how my tax planning should be executed and reported to tax authorities.”

— Paul K. Donovan, in Authority Magazine, October 2021

What Clients Say

“I’ve had the opportunity to work with Paul as co-counsel on several of the most complex and high-stakes divorce matters our firm has handled. Paul is a unicorn who seamlessly bridges the gap between law, tax, accounting, valuation, and forensic litigation strategy. His ability to untangle intricate issues across sophisticated domestic and international asset holding structures — including foreign trusts, offshore holding companies, closely held businesses, and real estate portfolios — has been instrumental for our clients. Paul is not only a trusted strategic advisor, but a critical asset for any high-net-worth litigation team.”
